Wilmington Island Real Estate Information
Wilmington Island is a medium sized community situated in the southeastern portion of the state of Georgia. Wilmington Island has a population of about fourteen thousand two hundred residents, and is technically considered a census designated place. Wilmington Island is situated in Chatham County, the same county as the city of Savannah. Not surprisingly, Wilmington Island is a part of the Savannah Metropolitan Area, meaning that residents of Wilmington Island houses and real estate can balance both individuality and urban convenience. Tybee Island covers a total area of approximately nine and two fifths square miles, including roughly one square mile of standing surface water. Wilmington Island has a relatively high population density, and is relatively homogeneous in terms of demographic statistics.
Ironically, most of the residents of Wilmington Island do not live on or near an island, considering the fact that the Atlantic Sea Coast is a few miles distant. The original inhabitants of Wilmington Island and the rest of the southeastern portion of the state of Georgia were Native Americans, primarily those of the Euchee Tribe. This region was discovered by non-Native Americans much earlier than much of the East Coast of the United States, well before the end of the sixteenth century. Permanent settlements did not begin until more than a hundred years later, and began to grow at a more substantial rate once railroads were constructed in the Savannah area. Today, Wilmington Island is primarily a bedroom community, meaning that most residents of Wilmington Island make their living in the nearby city of Savannah.
Educational opportunities in Wilmington are offered by an eclectic mix of private and public institutions throughout Chatham County. The largest conglomerate of schools that serves Wilmington Island is the Chatham Public School District, which includes local schools and numerous others in the greater Savannah area.
