Thunderbolt Real Estate Information

Thunderbolt is a relatively small community located in the southeastern portion of the state of Georgia. Thunderbolt has a population of approximately two thousand three hundred residents, although the comparable demographic patterns from surrounding communities suggest that this figure may have increased somewhat since the last census was taken in the year two thousand. Thunderbolt is located in the Savannah Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is considered a part of Chatham County. Thunderbolt encompasses a total area of roughly one and a half square miles, including about one fifth of a square mile of standing surface water. Chatham has a relatively high population density considering its small size, belying its suburban character. Chatham is also an important port, especially for shrimping ships based in the town.

The history of Thunderbolt is an interesting story in itself – the city takes its name from an old Native American legend that states that the local freshwater spring was created by virtue of a lightning strike. The original inhabitants of the region were of course Native Americans, although their influence began to gradually recede upon the arrival of European and American settlers towards the beginning of the eighteenth century. Thunderbolt was officially incorporated in the year eighteen fifty six as a town of the Empire State of the South. Thunderbolt was known as Warsaw during the first part of its existence, and had an economy heavily based on fishing and tourism. Thunderbolt is also home to the oldest historically black institution in the state, Savannah State University.

Thunderbolt is home to an annual Saint Patrick's Day celebration, and also boasts the Thunderbolt Museum. The educational needs of Thunderbolt are met by a number of public and private institutions, including the Thunderbolt Elementary School, Johnson High School, Bible Baptist School, Myers Middle School, and Savannah State University. Recreational attractions in and around Thunderbolt include the Hunter Bowling Center, the Gayle Bolton Gallery, Forsyth Park, and Daffin Park. Thunderbolt is situated within just a short drive away from the rather large city of Savannah, which offers a wide variety of urban points of interest that simply aren't available in smaller towns.
