Savannah State University is a four year university found within the city limits of Savannah, Georgia, which in turn is situated within Chatham County. Savannah State University is a historically black university, and is in fact the oldest such educational institution in the state of Georgia. There is a considerable amount of real estate around Savannah State University, including properties frequented by faculty and students of the school. Savannah State University shares its school motto, “Lux et Veritas”, or “light and truth”, with the highly prestigious college of Yale, located in New Haven, Connecticut. Savannah State University has a mission statement which says “to graduate students who are prepared to perform at higher levels of economic productivity, social responsibility, and excellence in their chosen career fields of endeavor in a changing global community.”
Savannah State University includes three main colleges, which are meant for undergraduate students; the College of Business Administration, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and the College of Sciences and Technology. Savannah State University also boasts four graduate research centers, including the Savannah Entrepreneurial Center, the Midtown Project, a collaborative project with the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, and the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Academic Support. Savannah State University is ranked by US News and World Report, and is best known for its Master's Degree programs. Savannah State University is home to just less than four hundred faculty and staff as well as roughly three thousand five hundred students.
Savannah State University was founded in the year eighteen ninety, when the Georgia General Assembly commissioned the institution under the name of the “Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth.” Savannah State University is found about five miles away from downtown Savannah, and is noted for a preponderance of Spanish moss, oak trees, magnolias, and camellias. Savannah State University is home to a number of sports teams and academic organizations, including nine fraternities and sororities. Savannah State University's mascots are the Tiger and Lady Tiger, and the school also maintains a newspaper and a college radio station. One of the most important extracurricular organizations in Savannah State University is the Wesleyan Gospel Choir, which has performed both locally and internationally.
