Port Wentworth Real Estate Information

Port Wentworth is a relatively small community found in the southeastern portion of the state of Georgia. Port Wentworth has a population of about three thousand three hundred residents, and is technically considered a part of the Savannah Metropolitan Statistical Area. Port Wentworth occupies the northernmost portion of Chatham County, a heavily populated suburban region centered on Savannah, Georgia. Port Wentworth encompasses a total area of about sixteen and a half square miles, including a small percentage of standing surface water. Port Wentworth has a population density of about two hundred residents per square mile, and is home to just under one thousand three hundred households. Port Wentworth is sadly well known because of a two thousand eight explosion at a sugar plant, although this attention had the benefit of bringing a spotlight to this extraordinary little town.

Port Wentworth is a rather unusual community in that the town did not come about until well after much of the region was developed. Of course, there were numerous Native Americans that held sway over the region for literally thousands of years before European settlers arrived, although their influence quickly receded upon the development of European communities. The first explorers in the region were Spanish conquistadors, who toured the region as well as plenty of offshore regions and islands. While the area which is now considered Port Wentworth was inhabited consistently since the eighteenth century, the city itself was not officially incorporated until the year nineteen fifty seven.

Port Wentworth has recently been undergoing something of a cultural revitalization that started just before the beginning of the nineteen nineties. This movement is focused on developing a more traditional style of community, instead of the current situation of shopping malls and master planned subdivisions. There are a number of historic sites and cultural attractions located near Port Wentworth properties and real estate, including the Tybee Island Lighthouse, a Saint Patrick's Day Celebration, and the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum. Educational opportunities in Port Wentworth are offered by a number of schools, including Port Wentworth Elementary School, George A. Mercer Middle School, and Effingham Christian School, as well as a number of other institutions in nearby Savannah.
