Hunter Army Airfield is a significant military base located within in the confines of an even larger institution, Fort Stewart. Among other things, Hunter Army Airfield serves as an alternate landing strip for the Space Shuttle, an aircraft parking area, and a runway. Hunter Army Airfield is responsible for more than five thousand military personnel, predominately those of the Third Infantry Division. Hunter Army Airfield is currently commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Whitney, one of the senior officers in the base. The airfield was converted from private to public use in the year nineteen twenty nine under the recommendation of the Savannah City Council.
Hunter Army Airfield remained the Savannah Municipal Airport until the year nineteen forty, when the facility was renamed the Hunter Municipal Airport. The airfield received this name in honor of a local World War One flying ace, Lieutenant Colonel Frank O'Driscoll, who would later become an Air Force general. Hunter Army Airfield became a military facility in the year nineteen forty, and received its current name in the year nineteen forty one, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. Hunter Army Airfield also had an important role in the Gulf War, Vietnam War, and the Korean War as well as the current conflict in the Middle East. Hunter Army Airfield also serves the United States Coast Guard, and has been in service constantly since the year nineteen twenty nine.
